How do I know what kind of turtle I have?

I live in the DFW Texas area, next to Trinity River. I found a small turtle at my doorstep today and figured I would take him in as a pet. However I'm not sure what kind he is so I don't know what to feed it. I'm also not sure of the either? I've never owned a turtle before so I'd appreciate some help! Thanks!
