Question about vectors used in unit cells?

I read that vectors can be used to describe the spatial frequency at which atoms are found within a crystal unit cell. I am confused by this as there are no spaces between atoms in unit cells-they are packed together. Or are vectors used to measure the distance and magnitude between the centres of atoms and if so would that creat spaces between atoms? Any calrification on this would be appreciated.
